Soaring Through Grief: A Review of Byri (2024)
Byri, the 2024 directorial debut of John Glady, takes flight with a powerful exploration of grief and the solace found in unexpected places. The film centers around a widowed mother, played with quiet strength by a newcomer, struggling to connect with her son after the loss of their husband and father. The son, adrift in his sorrow, finds solace in the competitive world of pigeon racing.
Glady paints a vivid picture of this subculture, capturing the frenetic energy of races and the meticulous care taken with the birds. However, Byri soars above a mere sports film. The pigeons become a metaphor for the fragile hope that both mother and son cling to. The film excels in its portrayal of unspoken emotions. The mother’s grief manifests in a suffocating protectiveness, while the son retreats behind a wall of stoicism. Their struggle to communicate is heartbreaking and authentic.
Cinematographer A.V. Vasantha Kumar’s work is noteworthy, capturing the vibrant backdrop of Nagercoil and the intense pigeon races with a keen eye for detail. The visual storytelling enhances the emotional weight of the narrative, making the audience feel the highs and lows of the characters’ journey.
While the raw performances by the lead actors are commendable, some supporting characters fall flat. The script occasionally falters, with pacing issues in the middle section. However, the film redeems itself with a powerful climax that underscores the enduring bond between mother and son.
Byri is a film that lingers long after the credits roll. It’s a poignant exploration of grief, redemption, and the healing power of connection. While some uneven acting and pacing hold it back from greatness, Byri is a well-crafted debut that announces John Glady as a talent to watch.
